The popularity of the iPhone 4 in Canada has led to the collapse of Rogers’ activation system for the Apple-made smartphone. Although unlike in the US where there is an exclusive carrier so that all demand is driven to AT&T, Apple is using a multi-carrier strategy in Canada so that Rogers is not the only one handling iPhone activations. Carriers Bell, Fido, Tellus, and Virgin are all offering iPhone 4 devices, including Apple with its unlocked model.

Although Rogers is affected by system outages, it seems that Fido, a Rogers subsidiary, is not suffering the same fate. Customers trying to purchase the iPhone 4 on Rogers are being given reservation numbers to come back later. At Apple in Canada, stores are moving customers from the other carriers to the front of the queue while waiting for Rogers’ systems to come back online.

It seems that Canadian users who are starting to purchase their iPhone 4 s today are noticing that their Apple smartphones come unlocked out of the box, but there is a huge caveat to that: unless you specifically pay the full, unsubsidized retail price for the iPhone at an Apple Store in Canada, iPhone 4s purchased through Canadian carriers will get locked up when the phone gets activated through iTunes.

Iain Barclay has come up with the Solar Powered Wireless Webcam which he dubs the FieldCam. After all, this is one webcam which relies on the power of the sun to function, and not only that, it works fine sans wires. Using a handful of off-the-shelf parts, a 3G cellular phone dongle and router, and a custom circuit board, the FieldCam was born. Of course, the box will need to be placed in the field under the open skies for it to obtain a constant charge on a clear day, where it will collect enough juice for it to snap a photo every 5 minutes which in turn will upload it to Flickr. It costs around £10 monthly for the 3G cellular data connection SIM card to get this set up running fine and dandy. While there was no mention of cost, it might be somewhere in the region of £200 or so for the full kit. Granted, this project seems to be dated from last year, but it is still worth a look considering the overall eco-friendly theme.

An LCD display is there for you to check out the latest adrenaline rush moment instantly, and for it to be water resistant is another plus point just in case watersports is your cup of tea. Depending on how much storage space there is left in the memory card, you can choose between capturing 3-megapixel or 5-megapixel images. The ATC9K also comes with a GPS plug-in which will be able to map your location, speed and distance traveled using Google Maps or Google Earth.

Sony has released the firmware 3.41 for its PS3 console, where it will include a new type of recommendation system for videos as well as games for the PlayStation Store. For those who are browsing through the store, perusing through information on new games or videos will come across a new option on the right hand side entitled “You May Like”. This will be based on the data collected from other user’s who purchased similar content. The new patch weighs in at around 40MB, making it an incremental update. Nice to see Sony introduce an update in such a small size, instead of the normal range of 100MB to 200MB, resulting in a much faster download time for users.

The Apple iPad isn’t meant for ordinary home users only as UK troops have the advantage of using a specially developed app that allows them to learn how to handle a fire mission. What’s a fire mission? It involves artillery being fired at the enemy from several miles away. Troops at the Royal School of Artillery in Wiltshire have undergone early trials using the iPad, helping them pick up jargon and procedures more quickly than before instead of having instructors lecture them. This could open up a whole new window of opportunity for both smartphone and tablet technology to speed up training across the army. We don’t suppose they could always kill some time during the lecture by having a go at Missile Command, eh?

At press time, the draft user manual references Cricket and Cricket-branded services, also calling the A310 as the MSGM8 II. While Cricket did sell a device which has the MSGM8 name, it could very well be offering the sequel here even though there is no official announcement just yet.

We all know that Samsung is working on a 7″ Android-powered tablet known as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but there is still no official word on a release just yet. Waht you see here though, it an apparent sighting of what could be the Samsung Galaxy Tab, barely fitting into a single hand. Should Samsung decided to include cellular capability into this tablet, you would do well to cough up some dough for a Bluetooth headset since talking into this right by your face is going to be extremely uncomfortable. Only time will tell whether this is the real deal or not, so be patient.

A protective earplug is a double-edged sword by itself – it not only blocks out the loud, harmful noises, it will also stop you from hearing peoples’ voices. Of course, this is where the QUIETPRO+ Intelligent Hearing System steps in to help – it comprises of a couple of regular-looking in-ear plugs that are wired to a small electronic control unit. Whenever it detects a fairly loud noise which could affect your ears in a dangerous manner, noise-canceling sound waves will be sent to the headset automatically. Should things quiet down, sounds like human voices will be amplified, augmenting your hearing abilities. Meant to be used in the armed forces such as the U.S. Army, the manufacturer is now working on the next generation of the device for oil rig workers. When will we see a commercial grade version?

Want to build a robot out of sheer fun, or do you want to further stoke your interest in this area? This is where the DFRobotShop Rover from RobotShop comes in, where it retails for all of just $89.99. This Arduino-compatible (ATMEga 328-based) robot will move along on treads just like a tank although don’t expect it to be anywhere near as hardy. The entire kit will come with an assembled circuit board, robot frame hardware, and a Tamiya motor gear box and tread and wheel set, where it is more than capable of toting around 2kg of gear without straining itself. You will need to have some knowledge on Arduino programming software though, where instructions will be sent via a MiniB USB cable. Powered by AA batteries, the DFRobotShop Rover might make a good play companion for your cat.
